A month ago, Claire Henderson gave birth to an adorable baby girl she named Brooke. Naturally, everyone who came to visit the two at the hospital wanted to kiss Brooke. Who could resist an adorable face like hers?
The only problem is that one of the visitors, despite showing no symptoms when he kissed her, transferred his Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) to Brooke.
One evening while Claire was breastfeeding Brooke, she noticed that her daughter’s lips were swollen and that she had what appeared to be red spots on her face and lips. She immediately took Brooke to the hospital where the doctor informed Claire that her baby had come in contact with the HSV-1 virus.
Little Brook had cold sores in the back of her throat and on her lips. Tests were done to be sure that her brain and kidney hadn’t been affected.
Dr. Bonnie Maldonado specializes in Pediatric Infectious Disease Research and teaches the subject at Stanford University. She says infections like Brooke’s are rare, but they’re very serious when they occur: the Herpes simplex virus is serious enough to potentially cause death to an infant!
But don’t worry! Most babies are protected thanks to their mother’s antibodies.
Claire shared her story on Facebook to alert other mothers of the dangers of letting people kiss their babies. Her post was shared more than 45,000 times.
And as for little baby Brooke? After 5 days in the hospital with treatments and being hooked up to machines, she’s back home and doing well!
Do you allow people to kiss your child?
